North Devon Footcare Project

Have you ever imagined what it’s like not to be able to reach your own feet or even cut your own toenails? That’s the problem hundreds of pensioners face on a regular basis.  However, now help is at hand, thanks to a recent Grassroots Grant of £500 from local charity Devon Community Foundation to the North Devon Footcare Project.

Set up by Nancy and Alan Green, the Footcare Project provides a bi-monthly drop-in service for elderly people in the Ilfracombe area of North Devon.  The project has eight trained volunteers, with two more currently being trained.  Thanks to the grant, which will cover travel expenses and new equipment, The Footcare Project will now be able to expand its service to Barnstaple, Combe Martin, Bideford, Torrington and Braunton.

Nancy Green explains, “Footcare is extremely important for older people and something they can’t manage on their own. Our volunteers provide a cheap and easy way for them to look after their feet.  It’s also a great way for isolated and older people to meet up with others, enjoy a cuppa and get their feet done at the same time!”

85 year Margaret Philips from Morthoe who uses the service comments, “I have real difficulty bending down to cut my toe nails so the service is an absolute godsend.  Everyone is so kind and helpful and I feel like I’m walking on air by the time they’ve finished with my feet!”
